The next edition of exploreASEAN is just getting started. But before it begins, read now about the highlights of the past 12 months and the best rated activities during the onsite seminar in Southeast Asia of exploreASEAN 2016-2017.
It is already two weeks ago since the Ambassadors of the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as representatives of the embassies of Thailand and Malaysia visited the campus of the FHWN for the event “ASEAN – One identity, multi traits”.
Building bridges between Indonesia and Switzerland
The relationship between students of the project team exploreASEAN and Indonesia began with the acceptance of the invitation by H.E. Linggawaty Hakim, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Switzerland, for the preparatory seminar at the FHNW in Olten.
The Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr Hendra Halim, and the project team of exploreASEAN had been in contact over several weeks to organize his appearance at the preparatory seminar on Monday, 13 February 2017. A workshop at the Continental Saigon Hotel was organized beforehand consisting of a roundtable discussion with numerous company representatives such as Mr Philipp Nüesch from Straumann and Mr Othmar Hardegger, Consul General for Switzerland in Vietnam and many more.
After previously having visited local Vietnamese companies and their premises in My Tho, last Thursday, we were ready to visit Swiss companies operating in Vietnam. Firstly, Jakob Saigon LTD strengthening the bond between CH and VN, and secondly, Fontina Viet Nam setting an example why Vietnam is the place to be for a pottery designing firm.
After the day off in Ha Long Bay, an insightful Sea food processing company and a seafood farming site were explored, the delegation had the chance to learn more about the Vegetigi Tien Giang Fruit and Vegetable JSC fruit processing and exporting company. By experiencing the local and traditional production of tasteful food products and handmade artwork in the heart of the Mekong river, the explorers had a taste of culture and business in one place
Following our insightful visits in Singapore and Indonesia, the explorers made it to our final destination: Vietnam! Hanoi- the charming capital welcomed us with nice weather on our arrival this Thursday. Here, the explorers have the chance to discover the rich culture of Vietnam as well as continue to expand their knowledge and network from the upcoming company visits.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded on the 8 of August 1967. Since then, the community has grown from five to ten member states and with it, many opportunities for their population. Today, ASEAN identifies itself with the motto: “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”. We had the honor to visit the ASEAN secretariat in Jakarta. For the afternoon, the Swiss Business Forum kindly invited us for lunch at the Grand Sheraton Hotel, where we had the possibility to network with Swiss and Indonesian business people.

In our second year of running, Indonesia is a completely new destination for exploreASEAN! In the largest country of the ASEAN region, the explorers are excited to receive business insights, expand their network as well as experience the diverse culture of Indonesia.
After the start of the onsite seminar, the exploreASEANdelegation is able to deepen their knowledge here in Southeast Asia for their research papers. Those papers encompass contemporary challenges affecting ASEAN countries in a total of 11 different topics.
After arriving safely on the 6th of April in the evening in Singapore, we had the chance to relax after a full day of travelling from Switzerland to Southeast Asia. For the next morning, the two first company visits of this year’s onsite seminar at Leica Geosystems Technologies Pte Ltd and at the ETH Future City Laboratory were waiting for us.
Following the slogan “Building Bridges for Young Talents”, the explorers are, thanks to the FHNW and numerous partners, in store of discovering three highly diverse countries making up a total of 7 different cities to be visited by the exploreASEAN delegation 2016-2017.
From June 6th to June 8th, 2017, exploreASEAN has the honour to host a special event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN at FHNW campus Olten. The event aims at highlighting the integration process in the past 50 years as well as the outlook into the future of the community.
We would like to thank the Swiss-Asian Chamber of Commerce, Bossart Films, Adam Uhren, Bruno Lehmann AG, Öufi Bier, Weinbaugenossenschaft Schinznach, Fredy’s, Chocolate Frey, Victorinox and Trauffer for their support of exploreASEAN. Only a month ago, exploreASEAN and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland was honored to welcome the Ambassador of Vietnam to Switzerland, His Excellency Mister Pham Hai Bang, for a final speech on the second day of the preparatory seminar. Thanks to his Excellency and the Vietnamese Embassy to Switzerland, the exploreASEAN delegation was granted free visas for its journey in Vietnam.

After two instructive company visits to two partners of exploreASEAN on day three, the delegation got to learn more about the ASEAN community members on day 4 and 5, when speakers shared their knowledge and success stories through presentations and roundtable discussions. Amongst the invited guest talkers the exploreASEAN management team welcomed Tuck Seng Low and Mr. Niklaus Glatthard from Swiss- Asian Chamber of Commerce SACC and the Co-founder of Magnolia CMS Mr. Boris Kraft
The first half of the preparatory seminar was packed with lots of great moments. Starting with the welcoming of the incoming students from Indonesia, the visit of the Indonesian Minister Counselor Hendra Halim, followed by the Tet introduction by 5 Vietnamese students as well as the Lunar New Year celebration with H.E. Mister Pham Hai Bang.
Lunar New Year, or in Vietnamese “Tết Nguyên Đán” (Tết), is regarded as the most popular holiday in Vietnam. Following the lunar calendar, the preparation for Tết begins a few days before the first day of the lunar year. The celebration usually lasts around seven days and is therefore considered the longest Vietnamese festive season.
While most of the students are studying for their exams, the exploreASEAN team is working on final organizational matters concerning the long envisioned preparatory seminar. It is how the workaday life looks like at exploreASEAN
Indonesia is the third and last country on the agenda of the preparatory trip for the project team. For the first time in the exploreASEAN project, Indonesia is being discovered to ensure a smooth onsite event in April. Read more about the company visits and impressions in the article!

On the journey in Singapore the project team got a teaser of two well-known corporations in the city state and got to meet the Sales Director Asia Pacific of Straumann.
Thanks to detailed coordination beforehand, the exploreASEAN project team got to meet Philipp Nüesch, Head of Sales for the Asia Pacific region at Straumann, who expressed his support for exploreASEAN and is delighted to share his expertise in doing business in Southeast Asia with this year`s delegation.

Today our delegation had the possibility to visit two Swiss companies which made their way to Vietnam. Fontina, a family business manufacturing pottery products, closed its branches in Switzerland and moved entirely to Vietnam. And Jakob Rope Systems which brought a major part of its manufacturing process to Vietnam.
